HEIRLOOM FRUITS  - (H) next to the fruit variety indicates it is an Heirloom

Andy's Orchard is a small fruit grower committed to growing and marketing fruits of superior quality. Heirloom fruits are still found at some fruit stands, farmers' markets and specialty markets. These venerated fruits from the past have distinctive, old-fashioned flavors but are rapidly disappearing from many markets and have become increasingly harder to find elsewhere. Such is the case with the 'Blenheim' apricot, the quintessential apricot with its rich, aromatic flavor but delicate texture. It is being replaced by very firm, mass-produced fruit with visual appeal but often without much flavor. Other old favorites that we continue to grow are 'Santa Rosa' plums and 'Elberta' peaches.

ARCTIC QUEEN August 5 - 15

Arctic Queen is a very sweet white nectarine harvested late, the first and second week of August.  A typical white nectarine aroma and flavor that is “floral” and rich.  Medium size.  It is excellent fresh but also makes a superior dried product.

CONSTELLATION (BN-9) July 1 - 10

A selection from Burchell Nursery.  Part of the Peppermint series of white nectarines.  Constellation is a medium to large white nectarine with deep maroon skin and many sugar spots.  A favorite of fruit writer David Karp.  High sugar with complementary acid.  Excellent flavor and quality.  Clingstone.

CRIMSON BELLE (RO, T68)  July 30 - August 10

One of the excellent white nectarines developed by the Hybridizers’ Group, CRFG.  Large fruit with crimson blush of cream color.  Melting, juicy flesh, and richly flavored.

DIAMOND RAY July 30 - August 10

A clingstone, yellow nectarine from Burchell Nursery.  Mid-season nectarine with very round full shape. Full red color, attractive glossy finish.  Excellent size and firmness.  Tart-sweet flavor.

FRECKLE FACE July 10 - 20

Named after Andy’s goddaughter, Julie, a freckled-faced redhead.  A yellow nectarine with blushed skin that is covered with many “sugar spots” or freckles which indicate high sugar content just below the fruit’s skin.  Sweet and tart with excellent flavor balance.

HONEY KIST July 5 - 15

One of the earliest yellow nectarines to ripen and one of the sweetest regardless of season. High sugar content with a very rich nectarine flavor sets this variety apart from many other yellow nectarines that ripen later.  Many of our customers favor its candy-like sweetness combined with a full-bodied nectarine flavor. The variety is a clingstone.

HONEY ROYALE July 20 - 30

Similar to Honey Kist with a low-acid nectarine flavor. Very sweet. Very large, highly blushed yellow nectarine with an oblong shape. Clingstone. Extends the season for the “honey type” nectarines.

PEGASUS (BN-6) July 5 - 15

A new, exciting white nectarine from Burchell Nursery.  It is part of the “Peppermint Series” which combines a high sugar/high acid flavor profile.  A favorite of the Santa Monica Farmers Market where it was first known as BN-6 but now called “Pegasus”.  It is a clingstone with juicy, melting flesh.

RAPUNZEL July 5 - 15

This little gem of a nectarine was developed by Burchell Nursery.  Also called “Snack Time,” it is a yellow, donut-type nectarine.  Orange-gold with a deep blush and very juicy, flavorful flesh.  A favorite at the Santa Monica Farmers Market.  Food critic Jeffrey Steingarten called it one of the best fruits he has have ever eaten.

RASPBERRY RED July 30 - August 10

‘Raspberry Red’ is a unique little nectarine with red flesh, deep burgundy skin and a luscious, complex flavor with sweetness, tartness and a very rich flavor. Very sweet with plenty of tart, raspberry-like flavor and a juicy texture.  A result of the fruit breeding work of the Hybridizers’ Group of California Fare Fruit Growers.

RED DIAMOND July 15 - 25

This nectarine is said to be the standard in quality for midseason yellow nectarines. It’s beautifully blushed with a juicy texture and the classic sweet/tart nectarine flavor.

ROSE DIAMOND July 1 - 15

Very early yellow nectarine with blushed and speckled skin.  Medium in size.  Excellent flavor and eating quality for such an early nectarine and sets a high standard for later ripening nectarines.  Developed by Bradford Farms.

RUBY SWEET July 30 - August 10

Ruby Sweet nectarine is an older variety developed by Bradford Genetics.  It is a yellow clingstone with very sweet flavor similar to the “honey” series of nectarines developed by Zaiger Genetics.  Firm but juicy texture.

SILK ROAD July 30 - August 10

Silk Road is a strain of the “Tashkent Gold” nectarine that was brought into the US from Uzbekistan, Central Asia. The fruit is a pure golden yellow inside and out with a distinctive flavor---tart/sweet and apricot-like. Thought to be of the same lineage as the fabled “Golden Peaches of Samarkand.”

SNOW QUEEN (H) July 10 - 20

When well grown and at its best, it is the absolute best of the white-fleshed nectarines.  Often suffers from cracks, scars and tough skin, but inside the flesh is tender, aromatic, juicy, and succulent with the richest of nectarine flavors. Both very sweet and acidic.  Limited quantities.

SUMMER SILK July 30 - August 10

Summer Silk nectarine is similar to Heavenly White but matures later and can be even larger than Heavenly White.  Huge fruit with a rich, luscious flavor that’s well-balanced. Result of breeding work by the Hybridizers’ Group of California Fare Fruit Growers.
